About Us

Hi there!

About the Artist

Hi there! It's me, JP! I am the artist and small-business-owner behind Sir Bean the Sloth!

I am a cartoonist, illustrator, and animator based in the Greater Seattle Area. I received a B.A. in Animation with a focus in production management and 2d animation production from Loyola Marymount University.

I am a queer, nonbinary, disabled, and chronically-ill cutie patootie with a passion for community building, arts education, and social justice.

Outside of Sir Bean the Sloth, I work as an indie freelance artist and volunteer my time as a program coordinator at an arts organization, and am a soon-to-be animation and character art instructor in the 2025 year.

Creating Sir Bean

I created Sir Bean in the summer of 2021 after taking a sloth drawing class with Jaguar Rescue Center and Wild Life Drawing. From the first drawing, I fell in love with my little character, and decided to create goofy animations and doodles for fun. An animation I made of Sir Bean doing a poop dance caught the attention of The Sloth Institute, and they shared my art on their page, leading Sir Bean to gather his first followers in May 2022.

Today, Sir Bean has become more than I could ever imagine, and all of your love means the world to me and my love for sloth conservation.

I can't wait to see where Sir Bean grows from here!

Disability, Chronic Illness, and the Small Business Life

My disabilities and illnesses play a huge role in my day-to-day life. Thus, it is a vital part to include in my small business life. I have been an activist in disability awareness since the spring of 2021, and Sir Bean is no exception to my disability work. From time to time, you will see Sir Bean showcase how disability issues and sloth conservation issues intersect (check out my "Meet the Sloth" blog under the "more" menu)

Additionally, when you support Shop Sir Bean, you support a disabled and chronically-ill person using creative ways to make a living in a world adverse to accommodating the diverse needs of the disabled community. Each purchase, each share, each comment means the world to me and helps me more than you can imagine. Thank You 💕

Do you take commissions?

I do not take commissions currently, but am working on opening it soon! My hopes is having it available in the next couple of months! Follow @sir.bean.the.sloth on instagram to look out for updates regarding commissions.

What programs do you use for your art?

I use ProCreate to design my art and stickers, and do some of my simple animated videos. Most of my more complex animated videos I do through ToonBoom Harmony–an animating software. To put together informational posts, I will often use Canva to arrange everything.

What products do you use to make stickers?

I make all of my vinyl stickers myself :) I use an Epson EcoTank printer to print print my stickers on Matte Vinyl. I laminate the stickers with Self-Adhesive Laminate Sheets. I then use a Silhouette Cameo 4 and the Silhouette software to cut the stickers out.

Why sloths? What made you choose to make Sir Bean?

Sloths are (one of) my neurodivergent special interests! At the beginning of the pandemic, I became very fascinated with sloths after finding the Slothopedia by The Sloth Conservation Foundation. At the same time, I was doing a lot of research on my other special interest, social justice within the disabled and autistic communities. To my surprise, there was a LOT of similarities, between social justice issues, misconceptions, and traits between sloths and the autistic community. From outdated and false terms used to describe both to sensitivities to the environment, so many commonalities between the two completely different groups resonated with me–an autistic adult myself.

Sloths are incredible creatures. We have so much to learn from them and to learn about them. We've barely scratched the surface in scientific studies of sloths.

I am also a cartoonist and animator and thought it would be really fun to create a character off of a sloth to share my special interest with others. And with that came the birth of Sir Bean!
