What is The Sloth Conservation Foundation?

The Sloth Conservation Foundation (SloCo) is a sloth conservation research center based in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica. Their work focuses around their main mission "to protect and preserve sloths in the wild."

Started by seasoned sloth researcher Rebecca Cliffe, the sloth conservation foundation focuses specifically on getting to the root of issues sloth face in the wild and urban spaces and develop long-term, sustainable solutions to help sloths thrive in the wild. By using this "forward-thinking," preventative strategy in sloth conservation, SloCo aims to find ways for sloths and humans to live in harmony.

What is the Urban Sloth Project?

The Urban Sloth Project is long-term study into how the fast-paced expansion of human cities and towns affect wildlife in the surrounding rainforest, especially wild sloths. SloCo follows specific sloths in urban areas for periods of time collecting all information on how urban environments affect their behaviors and biology. Through extensive research, SloCo can locate the biggest threats to sloths in urban spaces and help create solutions to lessen the threat.

Through this project, SloCo has also been able to locate where connectivity is needed most between patches of rainforest (habitat fragmentation) to help sloths travel safely between the different areas–and they build sloth crossings (long rope bridges for arboreal animals to walk across) in these spaces.
