Sir Bean's Postcard Adventure

Sir Bean's Postcard Adventure is an ongoing project where JP, the artist behind Sir Bean, doodles and writes on recycled postcards, and then hides them about any city or town they visit! The goal is to bring little bits of comfort and warmth into a stranger's day :)

Sir Bean Postcard Adventure visits San Diego, California!

Sir Bean's Postcard Adventure visits San Diego, California!

In the late fall 2024, after the success of my first NYC Postcard Adventure, I decorated 15 postcards to hide during a very brief trip to San Diego, California. The experience had a few ups and downs, but the sunny weather made it much easier to hide the card outside.

In San Diego, I had my first conflicting experience with the postcards. I hid card no.01 on a table in the "create your own hero" activity area in the John Jennings exhibit in the Comic Con Museum, next to a doodle of a hero I drew for Sir Bean. I was happy to hear back that someone had found it, until they sent me this photo:

They tore both my postcard and my super hero sloth doodle to shreds! My initial reaction was anger and upset... why would someone do this? and why would they show me what they had done to my art? Each postcard takes me 15-30 minutes to complete start to finish... it hurt to see someone destroy it so fast and with pride. But... after a moment, and a deep breath, I thought about what this project was all about from the start.

I create these postcards knowing that I have no control over what happens to them once I let them go. I create, draw, doodle, with the intent that my work will be in the power of someone else to dictate its future. All that I can hope is that once I let it go, it does what it can to be a light in someone's day. AND, if this person was having a particularly bad day, perhaps my card needed to be there to help them let their anger out, even if that means it was torn. And all I can do is hope that tearing the card helped ease their day...

...and that is okay :)

I returned to San Diego earlier this July (2025) to showcase my short film, Afternoon Snack, at the San Diego International Children's Film Festival, at the International San Diego Comic Con, and I brought 30 more postcards with me. Unfortunately, a convention is a little too hectic to track postcards, so I was not able to document the responses.

However, San Diego is a beautiful place, and it taught me an important lesson with my postcards.

I hope a can return again to San Diego to do a proper postcard adventure :)

Cheers!

(and P.S., if you want to tear up my postcards, go for it! If that is how it can help you feel better... but I don't need to see a picture of its destruction 😉)

Have you found a postcard? Send us a message and pic via instagram or email (jeeppeepdoodles@gmail.com)! We'd love to hear your experience finding one of our little cards :)
